Phantasma: Halloween Cocktail Recipe

Halloween and Dia de los Muertos are just around the corner! Phantasma is a Halloween cocktail idea created by the folks here at Bottles, a fine wine, craft beer, and liquor store in Providence, Rhode Island. To help you celebrate for Halloween, here is an easy tequila cocktail recipe that uses only 3 ingredients: Kah Tequila Blanco, Cocchi Americano, and fresh lemon juice. Watch the Cocktail Video

Phantasma

Ingredients
1.5 oz Kah Blanco Tequila
1.5 oz Cocchi Americano
3/4 oz lemon juice
Lemon garnish

Directions
Add ice to shaker. Add tequila, Cocchi Americano and lemon juice. Shake and then strain into a glass with ice. Garnish with a lemon wedge or lemon zest. Enjoy!

The Kah Tequila Blanco skull bottle is hand painted to represent a traditional Calaveras, or sugar skull, which is used in Day of the Dead rituals to symbolize death and rebirth. The word “Kah” translated to life in the ancient Mayan language.

Kah’s distiller’s use 100% hand selected Blue Agave, and is both certified organic and Kosher. Kah Tequila Blanco has sweet notes of cooked agave with a spicy white pepper punch, and is silky, delicate and smokey. This tequila is great on the rocks or for mixing in cocktails.

Cocchi Americano is moscato d’asti, a sweet white wine fortified with a touch of brandy and flavored with gentian root, cinchona bark, along with orange peels and herbs. Cocchi Americano makes a delicious aperitif or great base for mixing. Read this article to learn more about Cocchi Apertivo Americano’s resurgence in craft-cocktail bars across America. The New York Times also has a great article on this Italian aperitif wine.

Spirits Review: Laird’s Apple Brandy

laird's apple brandy
With fall in the air here at Bottles in Providence, you’ll want the perfect liquor to complement the  autumnal season. Distilled from pure apple cider, Laird’s 7 1/2 Year Old Apple Brandy is a delicious alternative to your regular brandy or spirit. Expect a delicate flavor and aroma redolent of fresh apples.
I suggest pairing it with a poultry, or you can add it as an ingredient for desserts. Just use as you would ordinary brandy for fantastic results!
Read this article by Michael Dietsch, a former Providence resident, Serious Easts: Drinks Correspondent, and author of A Dash of Bitters blog. Michael discusses the lesser known brown spirit, brandy, and gives a thorough background on Applejack and American Apple Brandy, as well as a couple tasty cocktail recipes for Apple Brandy.

RI Breweries: Grey Sail Brewing Company Tour

Recently, Bottles visited Grey Sail Brewing Company, a two year-old local Rhode Island brewery. Located near the beaches of Westerly near the Connecticut border, Grey Sail offers a solid range of tasty craft beers, including their Flagship Ale and Flying Jenny Extra Pale Ale. Dan from Grey Sail was kind enough to give a tour of the brew house, and to chat with me about Grey Sail beers. Watch the brewery tour video here.

Grey Sail Brewing Company was started in 2010 on the beaches of Misquamicut and Watch Hill in Westerly, Rhode Island. Jennifer Brinton and her husband Alan, a home brewing enthusiast, took their children to these beaches nearly every day. In 2009, Jen decided to use her talents to build and run the brewery that her husband, Alan, envisioned.

Can Craft Beers Alternative
Many craft breweries use glass bottles, while Grey Sail uses cans.

These aluminum cans are actually lined with a type of plastic, which better protects the beer from sunlight and air. Cans also take up less room in the fridge, are less likely to break, easy to recycle, and they can go where glass bottles can’t. This makes Grey Sail beers perfect for Rhode Island’s beaches, golf courses, patios and Rhody lifestyle.

A quirky feature of the old brick building is the leaning chimney, inconveniently situated, but a part of this historical building that Jennifer wanted to preserve. The Leaning Chimney Smoked Porter is its namesake.

RI Breweries: Newport Storm

The folks here at Bottles recently visited Newport Storm Brewery, a local Rhode Island microbrewery that was bottling their first batch of India Point Ale when we visited. This “IPA” beer is named after India Point Park here in Providence, RI. India Point Ale uses local Rhode Island Chinook hops and New Zealand hops. Bottles is a liquor store in Providence that has a great selection of craft beers to choose from.

Newport Storm was started in the 1990’s by a group of chemistry majors in college, and has been growing ever since.

They even distill their own rum, Thomas Tew Rum. Mike Rowe from the television show “Dirty Jobs” also paid a visit to the Newport Storm Brewery and signed a barrel!

We’ve been busy visiting more New England area craft breweries.

New Zealand Wine Video

Learn more about New Zealand wines in this Bottles video. To coincide with a New Zealand wine feature in store, we created this video full of photographs and information to introduce you to different wineries in the region. If you are in the Providence area, be sure to stop by for one of our Skype wine tastings, where you can video chat with the winemaker as you sample the wine.

New Zealand wine has been around since the 1800s, but due to its location, the rest of the world was unaware. In the 1980s, wines from New Zealand began making a name for themselves, especially with their Sauvignon Blanc wines. Currently, Pinot Noirs from the Central Otago region are starting to be noticed. In the video, Nick, our wine expert, gives his review on a Central Otago wine.

New Zealand Wine Review Video

Almost every winery in New Zealand is sustainable and environmentally conscious. They practice methods such as soil management and vine nutrition. These environmentally friendly practices are not the quickest or cheapest way to make great wines, but supporting these vinters is one small way to make a global impact through our daily life.

Whiskey Review: W.L. Weller Special Reserve

Need a whiskey recommendation? Eric, the Bottles spirits expert, reviews W.L. Weller Special Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Bottles has a great whiskey selection, with quality bourbons and single malts for you to browse through.

W.L. Weller Special Reserve is a wheated bourbon, made of 51% corn with the remainder being wheat, instead of rye or malted barley. This bourbon is bottled at “Kentucky proof,” which is 45% ABV or 90 proof, and it is great bourbon for a great value.

This bourbon is named in honor of William Larue Weller, one of the first Kentucky distillers to make wheated bourbons, back in the mid 1800s.

You can expect flavors of spice and honey, and aromas of caramel, maple and vanilla. Try it on the rocks, or mixed with your favorite local apple cider.

Rye Whiskey Revival Video

This month, Bottles in Providence is featuring Rye Whiskey, and we carry a great selection of quality brands in our liquor store, from familiar classics to interesting new finds. We even have an informational video all about Rye Whiskey, its history and current revival.

Rye was once one of the most popular liquors to drink in the United States, but after the Prohibition, American distillers moved on. Tastes had changed toward sweeter spirits such as bourbon. However, Rye Whiskey has been experiencing a revival, due to devoted cocktail enthusiasts who are bringing back traditional cocktails and local ingredients.

Rye must be made from at least 51% rye, while the rest is made from other grains. A higher ratio of rye gives whiskey its signature spice. The spicy, lean flavors of Rye pairs perfectly with citrus fruits, pumpkin ale, local cider and all things autumnal.
