Wine Feature: Sancerre

Introducing our regular review of quirky and unique findings from wine enthusiasts here at Bottles, a wine store in Providence, RI. Let’s start off with this somewhat obscure wine, red Sancerre.

You might be familiar with white Sancerre, perfect for hot weather with its cool, clean, and bright flavors, but this grape also has a dark side. By law, red Sancerre must be made of Pinot Noir in the Sancerre wine region of France. Beware, California Pinot drinkers. This wine is not what you might expect from a Pinot.
Red Sancerre is very food-friendly, dry, and earthy with wild strawberry flavors and well integrated tannins. Hippolyte Reverdy Sancerre is great for those who enjoy rare, classic wines made in a traditional style, using 400 liter wooden vats and grown at a 400 year old vineyard.
Cheers!

Shoulder to Shoulder Fundraiser

Bottles is a neighborhood store. We take special pride in supporting and sponsoring local events and organizations in the community. This past September, Bottles was honored to be asked to support the annual fundraiser for Shoulder to Shoulder, which took place right here in Providence, RI.

Shoulder to Shoulder (also known as Hombro a Hombro) is an organization dedicated to developing long-term, sustainable healthcare for the rural poor in Honduras. Their mission seeks to create an integrated healthcare system providing primary care physician access within an one hour walk, and specialty services within a hour drive for the people they serve. Based in Cincinnati, many of the Shoulder to Shoulder staff and Board members live in Rhode Island, including Dr. Emily Harrison, Shoulder to Shoulder’s executive director.

Bottles spent a beautiful evening outdoors, enjoying the first hints of fall and a wide selection of wines and craft beers from New Zealand with the guests.

While New Zealand is mainly known for their Sauvignon Blancs (and rightly so), the Marlborough and Central Otago regions of New Zealand boast some other world class wines.

As the guests were wowed by some elegant Pinot Noirs, they were also surprised by the range of reds and whites to be found. There were bone-dry Rieslings, a few mineral-laced Pinot Gris, and an unusual Cabernet, Merlot, and Malbec blend that had everyone talking. We even opened a few bottles of Cloudy Bay “Te Koko,” a rare and delicious barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc.

Overall, the fundraiser was a huge success, and Bottles was proud to help raise over $21k for such a worthy cause.

Bonal is a dark, delicious aperitif that is famous for stimulating the palate and self-proclaimed as “ouvre l’appetit,” or the key to appetite. An infusion of gentiane (a root) and herbs from the Grand Chartreuse Mountains, Bonal tastes a little like port, but not nearly as sweet. It has a bitter element from the gentiane root and chinchona (quinine).

Use Bonal in place of sweet vermouth (it’s great in a rye Manhattan), or drink neat or on the rocks with a twist of orange.

The longer you let this sit, the more the fruit will absorb the flavors. Also, try to use fruits that are in season. For the freshest fruit, visit your local farmer’s market.

Frog’s Leap is a winery located in California that makes this wine is dry and light with aromas of watermelon and summer flowers. Mathilde Pear Liqueur is a great cocktail ingredient made from 100% hand picked fruits. Instead of using regular ginger ale, try out Q Ginger Ale. This tasty ginger ale is made of all natural ingredients like rose oil, orange peel and of course, real ginger.
