Kosher Wines for Rosh Hashanah

Greet the Jewish New Year with our wonderful selection of sweet AND dry Kosher wines from all over the world! We have some exciting new finds to share with family and friends for Rosh Hashanah this year, in addition to our already plentiful section of Kosher wines. Stop by the shop to see for yourself!

Portuguese winery Aveleda, the Orthodox Union, and members of the Belmonte community have come together to create a Kosher Vinho Verde. Grinalda Vinho Verde is delightfully light and refreshing, and a great choice for main entrée chicken dishes, all the way through to dessert.

Another new arrival at Bottles is Don Mendoza Malbec, which is a perfect complement to red meat. This wine’s subtle spice and plum notes makes it a winner in our book!

Visit us, and please, if you have any questions or need help with your wine selections, the staff at Bottles are here to help. www.bottlesfinewine.com

Cheers!

Pinot Camp 2013 – Eric Taylor Goes to Oregon!

A few weeks ago we sent Eric Taylor, General Manager at Bottles, to Pinot Camp in Oregon. Oregon Pinot Camp is a three day immersion into the Oregon wine world. He had a blast and took amazing photos (and we got a week of peace & quiet). Check out our video and more photos below!

First day at the Argyle Winery in Dundee, Oregon. Along with producing the classic Oregon Pinot Noir, Argyle winemakers also produce delicious Chardonnays and sparkling wines.
Lena, the 100-year old ghost that haunts the Argyle farmhouse, which doubles as a tasting room for guests!
Eric attended and video chatted the store* from the Oregon Chardonnay Alliance (ORCA) Crab & Chardonnay Picnic.

*We have wine tastings every Saturday, so stop by and try!
The first day of Pinot Camp workshops started in Elk Cove Vineyards with a walk through the valley and a history of the Oregon wine industry and Pinot Noir.
Goats roam around the vineyards and help keep the weeds and grass at bay.
He also attended a grape growing workshop where he learned about all of the manual labor that goes into producing quality grapes.
Above are the original Pinot Noir vines planted in Oregon from 1966 — still alive and kicking today!
Campers had a really interesting “Soil Into Wine” tasting with 6 different wines from the 3 types of soil in Willamette Valley: Volcanic, Marine Sedimentary, and Windblown.
Each soil type leads to a different tasting Pinot Noir. Volcanic soil creates softer, more tannic wines with high-toned fruit aromas. Pinot from Marine Sedimentary soils are earthier with heavier tannins and darker fruit tones. Windblown soil (which is most common in the region) creates mixed berry, cedar and exotic spice flavor with a rounded tannin structure.
An example of Volcanic soil lead by winemaker Alex Sokol Blosser.
Campers tried oak aged wine and talked about closures; the cork versus screw cap debate. To test which was better, they tasted the same wine from 2005 – one corked and the other screw capped. Eric was shocked to find out that they were exactly the same, with hardly any difference!

On the last evening, Pinot Campers were treated to a traditional northwestern style Alderwood Salmon Bake at Stoller Vineyards.
Salmon is splayed out on wood frames so it will slow roast evenly over a large outdoor fire. It takes approximately one hour to bake completely, but is the tastiest, most unique flavored salmon around!
Of course we experience lots of rain, or “liquid sunshine” as it’s called in Willamette Valley.
Luckily Eric had his boots ready!
It was a truly enlightening experience! The wines were extraordinarily great throughout the region. The comradery and spirit of all the wineries was amazing. We will forever be a fan of Oregon wines!

Bastille Day Wines!

This Sunday, July 14th is Bastille Day! And what better way to celebrate the French National Day than with elegant French wines from across the region. Just look for the red, white and blue French flags across the store for our French favorites.

In France, Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille fortress in 1789, marking the beginnings of the French Revolution. Bastille was a symbol of Louis XVI’s regime and it’s capture marked an end to his absolute monarchy and the birth of the Republic of France.

Much like American’s Independence Day, the French celebrate their National Day with parades, huge outdoor feasts and fireworks. In the evening, Parisians attend the Bal Du 14 Julliet, a dance party with live bands and brightly colored costumes open for all to participate!

Here are some of our favorites:

So grab a few of these fine French bottles with some cheese and charcuterie and head straight to the park to celebrate! Vive la France!

A Visit to Allens Farms in Westport with Darius

Know your local farmer! Wine and food are natural partners, and so what better way to enjoy the best of both by choosing local, fresh, and seasonal foods?

We  love enjoying seasonally appropriate wines (rosé sangria in summer! big reds in the winter!), and so eating seasonally makes a lot of sense, too. Your food will taste fresher, be full of flavor, and you will be supporting your local farmer. Buy produce directly from local farms if they have a Community Supported Agriculture service, go to farmer’s markets, or look for local producers in grocery stores. CSA programs allow you buy a share of a nearby farm, where you receive regular baskets of super-fresh produce.

With this sentiment in mind, we’ve decided to start featuring local farmers, and thus our visit to Allens Farms and The March Hare with Darius Salko. Only a short drive down I-195 will bring you to idyllic Westport, MA, where you will find a plethora of farms, breweries, and vineyards just across the bay. This is where Debra Barrett started her 50-acre, certified organic farm in 1987.  You can find their potted herbs, vegetables, flowers, and other farm-fresh produce at farmer’s markets, grocery stores, and their CSA program.

If you start following this blog, you’ll be in touch with our regular feature of wine pairings with foods that are coming into season. Thank-you Darius for the fantastic radishes, arugula and pea greens!

Greenvale Vineyards in Rhode Island

Bottles supports local wineries! Watch our video about Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth, RI, which is not far from our wine store in Providence, Rhode Island. Nick, our Wine Manager, got a behind-the-scenes tour of the beautiful coastal vineyards and the wines with Nancy Parker Wilson, the 6th generation to own and operate Greenvale Farm. Learn more information about Skipping Stone White, Pinot Gris, and Cabernet Franc in addition to Greenvale’s history.

Greenvale Vineyards is a small-grower winery next to the Sakonnet River, and near Newport.

Greenvale was first a farm, and has been in the same family since 1863. Only recently in the 1980’s were grapes planted for wine-making.

Over at O’Dwyer’s Creek in the heart of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc country, a team of rabbinical students were given a crash course on winemaking, and entrusted with their own parcel of land to create a great Sauvignon Blanc. The wine with its cool climate varietal’s distinctive fruit flavors was so rewarding for the students and winemaker that they plan to return every year!

Senorio Aldaz Tempranillo is a classic, full-bodied red wine from Spain that pairs well with braised chicken and olives. Enjoy the intense burgundy color, violet tones, lovely open fragrance, and aromas of ripe fruit.

Chateau La Cheze is a traditional French chateau producing this impressive Bordeaux that is dry and earthy, pairing well with a leg of lamb and rosemary.

Hai Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Judean hills in Israel has a nice hints of cherry and oak to compliment roast beef and vegetables.

These are just a few examples of the diverse offerings in our Kosher wine section. Don’t forget something on the sweeter side for the haroset!

Spanish Wine Recommendations

We always enjoy featuring different wine regions on our in-store display, here at Bottles in Providence. Currently, we’re taking a good look at Spain, by showing some of the key regions of the country. Wines from Galicia, Rioja, and Catalonia were chosen to highlight the vast differences of styles, flavors and cultures you can find all over Spain. Let’s take a closer look at one of my favorite wines from Catalonia, Mercat Brut Nature.

The Mercat Brut Nature is a wonderful example of Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, and comes from the Northeastern corner of Spain. This Cava is made using traditional methods by El Xamfra, a top producer of Cava in Catalonia. A great quality sparkling wine for a great price! 91 Points, The Wine Advocate.

In the Penedes region of Catalonia, the winery ages the Brut Nature twice as long as the laws of Cava insist. They make this wine with almost ‘zero dosage’, meaning that very little sugar is used for the secondary fermentation. Only a mere 1/2 gram of sugar per liter is added for the natural bubbles to occur, making this wine one of the dryest bubblies on the market. Aging also makes this Cava taste mature. The Brut Nature has beautiful fresh fruit flavors, an elegant mid palate, and a super-long, mineral laden finish.

Aside from the three regions we are highlighting, we are also devoting a whole section to Garnacha, Spain’s most widely planted grape variety with a white, pink and red Garnacha. I recommend the Clos Dalian White Garnacha, which is light, fun, and floral. This wine’s bold aromatics and clean mouthfeel make it perfect for springtime.

Cheers,
Nick

Bottles for the Cause: "How to Love Wine" with Eric Asimov

Recently, Bottles and the Providence community welcomed the Chief Wine Critic of the New York Times, Eric Asimov, for a reading of his newest book, “How to Love Wine, a Memoir and Manifesto.”

Jennifer from Books on the Square, Eric Taylor from Bottles, Eric Asimov, and Susanna from Reach Out and Read

Eager fans could mingle with Mr. Asimov at Books on the Square the hour before the book reading, and taste four wines selected by Eric Taylor of Bottles Fine Wine and Mr. Asimov.

These featured wines included Ravines Dry Riesling, Thorigny Vouvray Sec, De Forville Dolcetto D’Alba, and Perroud Cote de Brouilly, provided with the help of Wine Wizards, Inc. All four of these wines are available at Bottles.

20% of proceeds from book and wine sales from the evening went to benefit Reach Out and Read Rhode Island. RORRI prepares the state’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with pediatricians to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. The Reach Out and Read program is in 43 clinical sites and reaches almost 35,000 children in Rhode Island.

Eric Asimov signed books, chatted with fans, and gave a wonderful summary and selected reading from “How to Love Wine.”

“For many people, wine is an anxiety-inducing mystery as arcane as quantum physics. With so many varieties, it’s difficult to know what to choose. That puzzling uncertainty often prevents people from buying and ordering wine, depriving them of an exquisite, deeply satisfying experience,” argues New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov.

In “How to Love Wine,” he examines why the American wine culture produces such feelings of anxiety and suggests how readers can overcome fears and develop a sense of discovery and wonder as they explore the diversity and complexity of the world of wine.

In a direct, down-to-earth manner, Asimov discusses favorite vineyards, wine’s singular personalities, the “tyranny of tasting notes,” and current wine issues. Thought provoking and enjoyable, How to Love Wine will help diminish readers’ anxiety, bolster their confidence, and transform them into wine lovers.
