Vodka: A Global History Seminar and Tasting

Vodka is defined as an odorless, colorless, tasteless alcoholic drink in the United States, and is not much of a challenge for bartenders to mix. However, if you don’t make a cocktail with it, vodka exists as a very pure spirit, where noticeable differences in aromas and flavors arise with different vodkas.

With this thought in mind, vodka became the star of the most recent Bottles event: Vodka: A Global History: Seminar, Tasting and Book Signing. On a warm spring evening, attendees gathered at Waterman Grille‘s Riverview Room, set on the banks of Seekonk River in Providence, Rhode Island. Folks tasted 5 vodkas from around the world as Patricia Herlihy and Eric Taylor talked about the history of vodka.

Patricia Herlihy is professor of history emerita at Brown University and its Watson Institute for International Studies, where she taught Russian and Soviet history. She is the author, most recently, of Vodka: A Global History. Eric Taylor, Bottles General Manager, is an enthusiastic vodka connoisseur whose favorite part about his job is education.

“I came into vodka through the back door. I studied temperance first, and then I saw the light. This book is the product of my conversion,” began Patricia at the start of the seminar.

The tasting was organized geographically, starting from Russia and then moving westward to Poland, Scandinavia, and finally to North America. Along with light appetizers, guests sampled Hammer + Sickle, Chopin, Finlandia, Hanger 1, and last but not least, Loyal 9 by Sons of Liberty Distilling in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. For an engaging history of Vodka, we highly recommend reading Patricia’s book, Vodka: A Global History.

Small Batch Bourbon Collection Review & Guide

Love bourbon? Liam, a manager at Bottles in Providence, recommends a few of his favorite whiskies from Jim Beam’s Small Batch Bourbon Collection. You might recognize Knob Creek, but the collection also includes great bourbons such as Basil Hayden’s, Baker’s, and Booker’s. Watch the video to learn a bit more about each of them.

Did you know that we can etch bottles with a personal message or logo? See our blog post featuring real customer examples of custom engraved whiskey bottles. We think these make perfect gifts for friends, family, bridal parties (engrave a wine bottle or glass!), best man gifts, and groomsmen gifts.

St. Patrick’s Day Drinks

I love St. Patrick’s day, maybe it’s because I can pass for a leprechaun in a children’s story or how for one day in the middle of a cold winter, everyone, or at least their coffee, is Irish. St. Patrick’s Day is a perfect reason to gather with friends, raise a glass of whiskey, and toast to the celebration of Irish culture. As always, we have all the proper staples – whiskies, stouts, red ales, lagers…and of course, your Irish cream liqueurs. Here are my favorite drink recommendations for St. Patrick’s Day.

Danny Boy Irish Whiskey

A classic Irish Whiskey, Danny Boy has delicious caramel and honey tones. Enjoy on the rocks or with your favorite ginger ale!

Duggan’s Irish Cream Liqueur

Perfect for cocktails with whiskey or vodka, this creamy liqueur is quite lovely on the rocks. Duggan’s also makes a great cupcake frosting for your St. Patrick’s day festivities, as well as a tasty addition to your coffee.

Newport Storm Spring Irish Red Ale

Local to Rhode Island (brewed by Newport Storm) and delicious, this red ale has a nice roasted malts and UK hops to lend a woodsy finish. Drink with your corned beef and boiled cabbage!
Slainte! (Cheers!)

Dorothy Parker Gin

“I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most,
After three I’m under the table,
After four I’m under my host.”
-Dorothy Parker, The Collected Dorothy Parker

Dorothy Parker American Gin, a creation by the New York Distilling Company, has arrived at Bottles! This gin is a homage to Dorothy Parker, an American writer, critic, and satirist, known for “her sharp, biting humor and widely quoted quips.” (nydistilling.com).

This small batch gin is well-balanced and full of flavor. Juniper, coriander, elderberries and the inclusion of cinnamon gives a little spicy kick on the finish. Great for gin and tonics or sipping, but especially perfect for a neat martini, Ms. Parker’s favorite.

You can read more about Dorothy Parker, New York Distilling Company, and Dorothy Parker Gin at the Dorothy Parker Society website: www.dorothyparker.com

The Dalmore

We are currently featuring The Dalmore Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky. Bottles staff were lucky enough to taste through each expression with Ralph Rooke, brand ambassador for The Dalmore. Some favorites were King Alexander III, Cigar Malt Reserve, and the Shackleton reproduction of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt. Watch the video to learn a little about The Dalmore’s long history and the different expressions available here at Bottles.

The 12
Matured for an initial nine years in American white oak ex-bourbon casks before being carefully divided. One half continues its maturation in bourbon barrels, the other half is transferred to 30 year old Matusalem oloroso sherry casks. Complex, yet balanced, The Dalmore 12 year old is the epitome of the Dalmore house style.
The 15
Twelve years maturing in American white oak ex-bourbon casks, then a three year finish in three different sherry woods – Amoroso, Apostoles and Matusalem oloroso. A robust, yet elegant spirit.
Cigar Malt Reserve
The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve benefits from a judicious selection of aged stocks drawn from casks of three types: American white oak ex-bourbon casks, 30 year old Matusalem oloroso sherry butts and premier cru Cabernet Sauvignon wine barriques. Bottled at 44% alcohol by volume, the body, structure and character of this extraordinary expression is the perfect complement to a fine cigar.

King Alexander III
Crafted to honour the act of saving Scotland’s King in 1263, this expression unites six specially selected casks housing spirit of perfect maturity. Whiskies matured in ex-bourbon casks, Matusalem oloroso sherry wood, Madeira barrels, Marsala casks, port pipes and Cabernet Sauvignon wine barriques are brought together in perfect harmony. Each cask gives its own flavour notes, delivering a unique complex single malt whisky revered by connoisseurs.

Castle Leod
This limited edition bottling celebrates the ancient and historic seat of Clan Mackenzie and is the second in a series crafted by Master Distiller Richard Paterson in homage to Clan Mackenzie.
Castle Leod has been home to the Caberfeidh, Chief of the Clan Mackenzie, since 1606 and is located just 14 miles from the The Dalmore Distillery. This classic Vintage 1995 expression was matured initially in American white oak and Spanish sherry wood, before being transferred for a final 18 months to barriques from a legendary 1st cru classe Bordeaux chateau.
Shackleton
In 1908, explorer Ernest Shackleton led his famed Nimrod expedition to the South Pole. Among his essential provisions was twenty-five cases of 1907 Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt. While the men failed to reach the South Pole, they did manage to make it back to base camp and safely home. Sadly the three cases of whiskey were left to fend for themselves. In 2007, New Zealand’s Antarctic Heritage Trust discovered the three cases and a long process respecting scientific protocols began. In 2010 a team of scientists opened the crates to discover eleven bottles, ten still in the wrapping! The pristine, untouched bottles were the first chance for scientists and distillers to study whiskey prior to the Industrial Revolution. The whiskey has been replicated with malts from Glen Mhor, Glenfarclas, Mannochmore, Tamnavulin, Glen Rothes, Pulteney, Ben Nevis and Jura – varying from eight to thirty years aged in the finest sherry barrels.  Apple, pineapple with hints of smoke and creamy caramel are just a few of the multitude of flavors in every sip.
